The Raven Wing Performance "M-XX" Series Headrest Speakers do a great job
of delivering quality sound in the Miata. They also have the rugged features,
and moisture resistance, that make them great for "Top Down" driving!
Everyone knows that the OEM factory headrest speakers don't last forever. And even if (by a miracle!) your's still work, if you've unzipped and opened your headrest upholstery and have seen the original "rectangular" units (about the size of a business card), then you know why they are such a popular item for replacement.
Simply stated: the ability to enjoy great music is an important part of your driving experience - and your Miata's headrest speakers are critical components in making that driving experience a pleasure!
The Raven Wing Performance "M-XX" headrest replacement
speakers are available in two sizes:
The 3-1/2" speakers fit right into your existing headrests, no matter if you have the base model or the factory upgrade stereo. With these speakers you can't go wrong!
The 4" speakers are for those looking for even more output. They will fit your headrests with the removal of some foam upholstery!
Speakers come with positive (+) and negative (-) terminals clearly marked, and plug right into your car's wiring!
Headrest speakers are sold as pairs (2 speakers).
One set will replace the speakers in one seat. So if you want to replace the headrest speakers in both seats, you'll need to order two (2) sets of speakers.
NOTE: The 4" speakers are not compatible with the factory upgrade stereo found on the '90-'97 Miata. Models with "round" upgrade headrest speakers can be identified by the 4 screws that need to be removed to lay the perforated plastic panel forward when the headrest upholstery is unzipped. Only 3-1/2" round speakers will work in these applications. (for more info see below)
NOTE: 1999 to 2005 Miata do not have speakers in their headrests.
Check this out,
If your Miata doesn't have the factory stereo upgrade "round" headrest speakers, then your Miata has the original "rectangular" speakers (or no speakers at all).
All replacement headrest speakers are now ROUND. No one makes the old rectangular speakers for the Miata any more - not even Mazda. So don't panic when you open your headrests and find the old goofy looking rectangular jobs. Just be glad you're replacing them with a set of these cool units from the Raven Wing!!!

Here are some handy tips for identifying what type of headrest speakers are right for you.
When you open up the headrests by unzipping the top of your seats, you will find one
of three different conditions:
1. Your Miata has the FACTORY STEREO UPGRADE. If this is the case, you'll find 4 screws in the face of the plastic fascia (it has little holes in it to let the sound through). Miatas with the stereo upgrade will only accept 3.5" speakers. Our speakers will bolt right up to the existing speaker mounts. We also provide a set of extra connectors that you can use to replace the stock tiny ones so that you can use the existing wiring to connect to our speakers.
2. Your Miata has that STANDARD STEREO. If this is the case, the plastic fascia isn't held in by screws; and it will open up with the upholstery when the top of the seat is unzipped. Inside the headrest you'll find two small rectangular speakers. They must be removed, then you must also remove the rectangular speaker supports (boxes) that originally held the speakers in place. If these are not removed, the new speakers will not fit into the speaker cavities. Once the foam speaker cavities are emptied, our 3.5" speakers will press right into the foam openings. You can also install our 4" speakers, but some of the foam must be cut away to provide clearance. The existing speaker wires can be used on either size of our speakers. But in order to use the existing wiring, you will need to use the set of extra connectors (2) that we provide. The extra connectors that we provide will attach directly to our speakers.
3. Your Miata doesn't have any speakers in the headrests at all. If this is the case, you have your choice of 3.5" speakers that will press right into the empty foam speaker cavities; or you can install our 4" speakers after cutting away some of the foam to provide clearance. If your Miata doesn't have speakers in the headrests, you will also need to run new speaker wire from the backside of your Miata's stereo to the seats. It is recommended that you connect to the "fade" at the back of the stereo so that you can control the volume of the headrest speakers independently of the door speakers.
