There's a protective "oil residue" on some (most!) new exhaust components that is a byproduct of the mandrel bending / machining processes. This oil residue can smoke (and stink!) the first few times you start your car and get the exhaust system good and hot. Don't panic - the smoke and the smell goes away fairly quickly. It's not a defect. It's just part of the "performance car" experience.
